TRIBUTE TO ROALD NIGEL ADRIAN (RNA) HENRIQUES, OJ.,KC.

The General Legal Council notes with sadness, the recent passing of the Hon. Roald Nigel Adrian (RNA) Henriques, OJ., KC.

On Wednesday August 9, 2023, we celebrate his life of service at the University Chapel at 2:00pm.

Mr. Henriques was for his entire professional life, a committed leader of the Jamaican Bar. He gave his time unstintingly in countless ways; by lecturing Constitutional and Administrative law in the Department of Government at the University of the West Indies, by serving on the Council of the Jamaican Bar Association, by presenting papers to be offered by the Jamaican Bar Association during the very early days of continuing legal education seminars from the 1980’s; contributing as a member of the Accreditation Committee of the General Legal Council; serving as the nominee of the Bar on the Judicial Services Commission and many more too countless to mention.

He was admitted to the Bar in Jamaica in 1962 following his admission to the Bar in England at Lincoln’s Inn in 1961. He then commenced an illustrious career, appearing in numerous cases in Jamaica, the Cayman Islands and the Eastern Caribbean as well as in the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council. His, was a particularly incisive mind with a keen ability to hone in on the gravamen of the issue, whether it was a constitutional, criminal, commercial, revenue, trust or banking matter.

Mr. Henriques appeared in many cases which have enriched Jamaican jurisprudence most notedly, Hinds v The Queen [1976]; Noel Riley v The Queen [1982]; Banton v Alcoa Minerals of Jamaica Inc. (1971); Allen v Byfield (1970) ; The Queen v Allan Issacs; Charlton v Air Jamaica (1999); Dojap Investments Ltd v Workers Savings & Loans Bank JM [1993], The Jamaican Bar Association v AG and the GLC [2014] Chen-Young (Paul) et al v Eagle Merchant Bank of Ja Ltd and Anor [2017], to name but a few.

The General Legal Council extends its sincerest condolences to his wife and family.
