Practising Certificate Fees

NOTICE TO ALL ATTORNEYS-AT-LAW

Attorneys-at-law are hereby reminded of Regulation 9 of the Legal Profession (Enrolment & Practising Certificate Fees) Rules 1971 as amended by the Legal Profession (Enrolment & Practising Certificate Fees) (Amendment) Rules 1992, which states:

“Where an attorney is on the roll of Attorneys on the 1st January in any year and was issued a Practising Certificate in the previous year then unless he pays the prescribed Practising Certificate fee on or before the 28th February in the current year he shall be liable to pay twice the prescribed Practising Certificate fee unless he proves to the satisfaction of the General Legal Council that he did not practise at any time during the current year prior to the actual date of such payment and shall be presumed to be in breach of the provisions of Canon II(j) and Canon V(s) in respect of such period in the current year as precedes the payment of the Practising Certificate Fee.”

If you do not intend to practise for a period of time (and to therefore not maintain a practising certificate for that period) we recommend that you inform the General Legal Council prior to that period of the decision and the reasons and get a confirmation that the reasons have been accepted.
