The General Legal Council hereby notifies that a number of Attorneys-at-law have failed to renew their practising certificates for the year commencing 1 January 2016. The General Legal Council is finalizing the list of attorneys-at-law who have not renewed their practising certificates in 2016. The list will be published on the Council’s website and issued to all the Courts in the Island.
Attorneys who have not renewed their practising certificates have no right of audience before the Court and further, pursuant to s8(3) of the Legal Profession Act, it is a criminal offence for any person to act as an attorney in any action or matter while not being duly qualified or entitled to act as an attorney-at-law. Attorneys-at-law who have not obtained their practising certificates for the year 2016 are therefore urged to do so at once to avoid being deprived of audience before the Court and the risk of prosecution.
Further, the General Legal Council has sought an increase in practising fees to take effect on 1st May 2016. If you have not paid up your practising fee for 2016, it is in your interest to do so before the increase takes effect.
All attorneys-at-law who have not renewed their practising certificate are therefore urged to do so immediately. It is in your interest to regularize your status.
